Ingredients

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

½ cup granulated sugar

2 tsp baking powder

½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

1 tsp ground cinnamon

½ tsp nutmeg (optional)

1 large egg

¾ cup buttermilk (or milk with 1 tsp vinegar added)

¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

¼ cup granulated sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a donut pan by lightly greasing it with cooking spray or butter.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using) until well combined.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.

Create the Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Gently fold everything together until just combined; be careful not to overmix. The batter should be slightly lumpy but fully incorporated.

Fill the Donut Pan: Using a piping bag or a spoon, fill each donut cavity about 2/3 full with batter. Wipe the edges to prevent any batter from sticking.

Bake: Place the donut pan in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the donuts spring back when lightly pressed and are lightly golden on top.

Make Cinnamon Sugar Coating: While the donuts are baking, mix together ¼ cup of granulated sugar and 1 tsp of cinnamon in a shallow bowl.

Cool and Coat: Once the donuts are baked, remove them from the oven and let them cool in the pan for about 5 minutes. After that, gently remove the donuts from the pan and brush them with melted butter before rolling them in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well-coated.

Serve: Let the donuts cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature with a cup of coffee or tea!
