Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup diced cooked ham

3/4 cup buttermilk

1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional)

1 tablespoon fresh chives, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.

Cut in the Butter: Add the cold cubed butter to the flour mixture. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Add Cheese and Ham: Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese and diced ham, ensuring they are evenly dispersed throughout the flour mixture.

Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk with Dijon mustard (if using). Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and gently stir until just combined. Be cautious not to overwork the dough.

Shape the Biscuits: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Fold the dough over itself a couple of times to create layers, then flatten it to 1-inch thick again. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter or a glass.

Bake the Biscuits: Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.

Cool and Garnish: Remove the biscuits from the oven and let them cool slightly. Optionally, sprinkle with fresh chives for an added flavor boost and a pop of color.

Serve Warm: Enjoy your savory ham and cheese butter biscuits warm, perfect as a side dish or a delightful snack!
