Ingredients

1 sheet of puff pastry (thawed)

4 oz sliced ham (preferably smoked or honey-baked)

4 oz shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyère, or your choice)

1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard (optional)

Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)

Fresh herbs (like thyme or parsley, optional for garnish)

Flour (for dusting)

Instructions

Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases and to make it slightly thinner. Cut the pastry into strips about 1 inch wide.

Add Filling: If using, spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on half of each strip. Place a slice of ham on top, followed by a generous sprinkle of shredded cheese.

Create Twists: Fold each pastry strip in half lengthwise, sealing the edges. Twist each strip several times to create a spiral. Make sure the filling stays inside.

Egg Wash: Place the twisted pastries on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them. Brush each twist with the beaten egg to give them a beautiful golden color when baked.

Season: Sprinkle freshly ground black pepper on top of each twist. If you like, add a sprinkle of chopped fresh herbs for extra flavor.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until the twists are puffed up and golden brown.

Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
