The term "charcuterie" originates from France, where it referred specifically to the preparation of cured meats. Traditionally, charcuterie was a way to preserve meat before the advent of refrigeration, and skilled artisans would create a variety of products such as sausages, pâtés, and terrines. Over time, the concept has evolved to encompass a broader range of foods, integrating cheeses, fruits, nuts, and accompaniments into the presentation. This transformation reflects a modern culinary trend that celebrates not only the art of meat preservation but also the joy of sharing a diverse array of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

1 wheel of Brie cheese

1 block of aged cheddar cheese

100g prosciutto, thinly sliced

100g salami, thinly sliced

1 cup mixed olives (green and kalamata)

1 cup fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)

1 cup nuts (almonds and walnuts)

1 small jar of honey

1 small jar of fig jam

1 French baguette, sliced into thin rounds

Fresh rosemary and thyme sprigs for garnish

Instructions

Prepare the Board: Choose a large wooden or slate board as your serving platter. Start by arranging the cheeses in separate corners of the board.

Layer the Meats: Fan out the prosciutto and salami slices beautifully, overlapping them slightly for visual interest. Place these next to the cheeses.

Build the Olive Bounty: Use a small ramekin or bowl for the mixed olives, and position it beside the meats.

Add Freshness: Scatter the fresh berries throughout the board, filling gaps and adding a pop of color.

Incorporate Crunch: Pile the nuts into small mounds around the board, ensuring they are easily accessible for snacking.

Sweet Touches: Position the jars of honey and fig jam at strategic points around the board for easy dipping with cheese and meats.

Toast the Bread: Arrange the slices of baguette on the board or in a separate basket for dipping into the honey and fig jam.

Finishing Flourishes: Garnish the board with fresh sprigs of rosemary and thyme for a fragrant touch.

Serve and Enjoy: Provide cheese knives and small forks for ease of picking and dipping. Encourage guests to create their own combinations!
