Ingredients

1 loaf of brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes

6 large eggs

2 cups whole milk

1 cup heavy cream

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Pinch of salt

1/2 cup maple syrup (plus more for serving)

1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

Powdered sugar for dusting

Fresh berries for garnish (strawberries, blueberries, or raspberries)

Instructions

Prep the Bread: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed brioche or challah with the chopped nuts if you’re using them. Spread the mixture evenly in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.

Make the Custard: In a separate large bowl, whisk together the eggs, whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and pinch of salt until well combined.

Combine: Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all the bread is soaked. Use a spatula to gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the custard. Drizzle the maple syrup across the top.

Cover and Refrigerate: Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Place it in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or overnight, allowing the bread to fully absorb the custard.

Preheat the Oven: When you're ready to bake, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake: Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator, uncover it, and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.

Cool and Serve: Allow the French toast bake to cool for about 10 minutes. Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with additional maple syrup and fresh berries on top.

Enjoy: Slice and enjoy your deliciously decadent French Toast Bake with friends and family!
