The first step in making your garlic breadsticks is to activate the yeast. This process is crucial as it helps to develop the dough by allowing the yeast to begin fermenting. Start by combining warm water (about 110°F or 43°C) with sugar and yeast in a small bowl. Let this mixture sit for about 5-10 minutes. You’ll know the yeast is activated when it becomes frothy and bubbly, indicating that the yeast cells are alive and ready to work their magic in your dough.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons active dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

3/4 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

3 tablespoons olive oil

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped

1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)

Grated Parmesan cheese for topping (optional)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-7 minutes, until bubbly and frothy.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture along with the olive oil. Stir until the mixture forms a rough dough.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour as needed.

First Rise: Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with a clean towel and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Prepare Garlic Mixture: In a small bowl, combine melted butter, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using). Set aside.

Shape the Breadsticks: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into strips, about 1 inch wide, and twist each strip to form a breadstick shape.

Second Rise: Place the twisted breadsticks on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.

Preheat Oven: While the breadsticks are rising, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

Bake: Once the breadsticks have risen, brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. If desired, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Serve: Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, and serve warm. Drizzle any remaining garlic butter over the breadsticks, if desired, or enjoy with marinara sauce for dipping!
