For the Coffee Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

1 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled

3 large eggs

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Caramel Sauce:

1 cup granulated sugar

6 tbsp unsalted butter

½ cup heavy cream

1 tsp sea salt (optional)

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

8 oz cream cheese, softened

½ cup unsalted butter, softened

3 cups powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

2 tbsp brewed coffee (optional, for extra flavor)

Instructions
 

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

    Prepare the Coffee Cake Batter: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add the brewed coffee and vanilla extract to the mixture.

      Combine Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

        Bake the Cake Layers: Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

          Make the Caramel Sauce: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the granulated sugar, stirring constantly until it turns a deep amber color. Add the butter and stir until melted and combined. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring (be careful, as it will bubble up). Cook for an additional minute until smooth. If desired, stir in the sea salt. Set aside to cool.

            Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting: In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, mixing well. Add the vanilla extract and brewed coffee (if using) and mix until smooth and fluffy.

              Assemble the Cake: Once the cake layers are completely cooled, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous layer of cream cheese frosting over the top. Drizzle some of the caramel sauce on top of the frosting. Place the second layer on top and repeat the frosting and caramel drizzle.

                Final Touch: Frost the sides of the cake with the remaining cream cheese frosting and drizzle more caramel sauce over the top.
