At the heart of this burger's flavor lies the process of caramelization, a cooking technique that transforms the natural sugars in onions into a rich, sweet, and complex flavor profile. Caramelization occurs when onions are cooked at low to moderate heat, allowing their sugars to slowly break down and brown, resulting in that signature golden hue and a deep, sweet flavor.

Ingredients

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 pound ground beef (80/20)

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 hamburger buns, toasted

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard (optional)

Fresh arugula or spinach, for topping

Pickles (optional)

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions:

    - In a large skillet, heat the olive oil and butter over medium heat.

      - Add the sliced onions, season with a pinch of salt, and cook for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized. Adjust the heat if necessary to prevent burning.

        Prepare the Burger Patties:

          - While the onions are caramelizing, form the ground beef into four equal patties. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent them from puffing up during cooking. Season both sides generously with salt and pepper.

            Cook the Burgers:

              - Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burger patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, depending on your preferred doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty to allow it to melt.

                Assemble the Burgers:

                  - Spread Dijon mustard (if using) on the bottom half of each toasted bun. Place the burger patty with melted cheese on top, followed by a generous helping of the caramelized onions. Add fresh arugula or spinach and pickles, if desired. Top with the other half of the bun.

                    Serve:

                      - Serve immediately with your favorite side, such as sweet potato fries or a fresh salad. Enjoy your delicious Caramelized Onion Swiss Burgers!
