Ingredients

1 lb (450g) flank steak, thinly sliced

2 large onions, thinly sliced

2 tbsp olive oil

1 tbsp balsamic vinegar

4 slices of provolone cheese

1 tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

4 fresh hoagie rolls or baguette halves

Optional: Fresh arugula or spinach for topping

Optional: 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce for extra flavor

Instructions

Caramelize the Onions: In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Sauté for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are soft and begin to caramelize. Add balsamic vinegar, continue cooking for another 5 minutes until deeply caramelized. Set aside.

Prepare the Steak: Season the thinly sliced flank steak with garlic powder, salt, and pepper. If using Worcestershire sauce, add it to the steak now.

Cook the Steak: In the same skillet over medium-high heat, add the remaining tablespoon of olive oil. Once hot, add the steak in a single layer. Cook for about 2-3 minutes per side until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove from heat.

Assemble the Sandwich: Slice the hoagie rolls or baguette in half, and layer the cooked steak evenly onto the bottom half of each roll. Top with the caramelized onions and then place a slice of provolone cheese over each portion of steak.

Melt the Cheese: Option 1: Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler for about 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Option 2: Cover the skillet over low heat for a few minutes until the cheese melts.

Add Fresh Greens: If desired, add a handful of fresh arugula or spinach on top of the melted cheese for a pop of color and freshness.

Serve and Enjoy: Close the sandwich with the top half of the roll, slice it in half, and serve immediately while hot.
