Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp salt

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

2 medium apples (preferably Granny Smith), peeled and diced

1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1/4 cup brown sugar (for filling)

1 tbsp ground cinnamon (for filling)

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Set aside.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar using an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract until combined.

Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overmix.

Fold in Apples and Nuts: Gently fold in the diced apples and chopped nuts (if using) into the batter.

Prepare the Cinnamon Swirl: In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1 tbsp ground cinnamon. Set aside.

Assemble the Loaf: Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Sprinkle half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the batter. Pour the remaining batter on top, and then sprinkle the rest of the cinnamon-sugar mixture.

Create Swirls: Using a knife or a skewer, gently swirl through the batter to create a marble effect. Be careful not to over-mix.

Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for about 55-65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. If the top gets too brown, cover it lightly with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.

Cool and Serve: Once baked, remove the loaf from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Enjoy: Serve warm or at room temperature. This loaf pairs perfectly with a cup of tea or coffee!
